Kunal Shah (born 30 May 1979) is an Indian entrepreneur and angel investor. He is best known for co-founding the online recharge platform FreeCharge and later founding CRED, a members-only credit-card bill payment and rewards platform.[1]

Early Life and Education

Kunal Shah was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He studied philosophy at Wilson College. From a young age, he worked alongside his studies and developed an interest in business and entrepreneurship.

He later enrolled in a part-time MBA program at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), but dropped out before completing the course.[2]

Career

Early Ventures

In 2009, Shah founded PaisaBack, a cashback and promotions company. The concept later evolved into FreeCharge.[3]

FreeCharge

In 2010, Shah co-founded FreeCharge with Sandeep Tandon. The platform allowed users to recharge mobile phones and receive discount coupons in return.

In April 2015, FreeCharge was acquired by Snapdeal in a deal valued at approximately ₹2,800 crore, making it one of the notable startup exits in India.[4]

CRED

After the FreeCharge exit, Shah founded CRED, a fintech platform that enables users to pay credit-card bills and earn rewards. The platform is designed as a members-only service, granting access based on users’ credit scores.

CRED quickly gained popularity for its premium positioning and innovative approach to financial behavior.

Angel Investing and Other Activities

Kunal Shah is one of India’s most active angel investors. He has invested in over 200 startups across sectors, including fintech companies like Razorpay and BharatPe.[5]

He has also served as an independent director at Syrma SGS Technology Limited.
