Haq (transl. Right) is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language courtroom drama film directed by Suparn Verma. Starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam Dhar in lead roles, the film is inspired by the landmark Supreme Court case Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. The film explores themes of constitutional rights, gender justice, and the intersection of law, religion, and society. It was theatrically released on 7 November 2025.[1]
Plot
Haq follows the legal struggle of Shazia Bano, a woman who approaches the courts after her husband enters into a second marriage. As the case unfolds, the courtroom becomes a space where deeply rooted social traditions, religious beliefs, and women’s rights collide. The narrative highlights Bano’s pursuit of dignity and justice while examining the broader implications of personal law and constitutional equality.

Production
Haq was produced by Junglee Pictures, Insomnia Films, and Baweja Studios. The screenplay was written by Reshu Nath, with music composed by Vishal Mishra. Drawing inspiration from the Shah Bano legal battle and literary accounts of the case, the film aims to present a balanced and empathetic portrayal of a complex socio-legal issue. It received a U/A certificate prior to release.[2]

The film was released theatrically across India on 7 November 2025. It opened to strong interest due to its subject matter and ensemble cast.
Reception
Haq received largely positive reviews from critics. Reviewers praised the film’s sensitive handling of a controversial subject, strong performances, and restrained direction. Critics from publications such as NDTV, The Indian Express, Scroll, Rediff, and Hindustan Times highlighted its maturity and focus on women’s rights.[3]
Several outlets including Filmfare, The Times of India, and India Today awarded the film ratings between 4 and 4.5 stars, describing it as impactful, sincere, and socially relevant. Overall, critics regarded Haq as a timely and courageous film that addresses a challenging issue with empathy and clarity.[4]
